10 Ways to Protect Yourself

Unfortunately there are people out there who have total disregard for other people and no respect for their properties or possessions. It is sad to think that members of the community would willingly break into other people’s homes, steal and even injure innocent people. You can do something about it and put measures into place to protect yourself. Things like installing security doors and security screens on your home is a good start, or learning to protect yourself by taking some self defence classes.

Learn self defence

If you feel nervous about walking anywhere by yourself perhaps you might want to think about taking some self defence classes. The classes won’t teach you fighting moves but rather how to fend off an attacker long enough to get yourself to safety. It is a great course for women to do and gives you that added bit of confidence.

Park your car under lights

If you are going somewhere at night or if you know you won’t be leaving until after dark make sure you park your car somewhere under a set of street lights. You are less likely to be attacked by someone in a well lit area. Remember that the dark is a friend of thieves and potential attackers so keep out of it.

Install a security door

Help protect your home by installing a security door. A security door will make it hard for someone to break in plus you can leave your front door open in summer, while still keeping the security door locked, and let a breeze through. If anyone comes to the door you can open the door but keep the security door shut and locked, which is a safe alternative when opening the door to strangers.

Light your home

Keep the exterior of your home will lit with garden lights and overhead lights. Have lights above your front and back door and leave these on when you go out so that you are not coming home to a dark house.

Security alarm system

A security alarm system can not only act as a deterrent but it will mean that if anyone does break into your house they won’t have time to do much damage or get much out of the house before neighbours and the security company are alerted.

Security cameras

Security cameras will give you that added feeling of safety while you are at home. You can set a camera at your front gate so you can see the person before they even enter your property or you can have one positioned over your front door so you can see who is knocking at the door without taking the risk of opening it to a stranger.

Buy a dog

Another way to protect yourself and your property is to buy a guard dog.

Security screens

Security screens can be put across your windows so that would be thieves can not break in through your windows. You can leave your windows open on hot days and nights and no one can get in.

Carry personal protection

You can also carry personal protection when you go out, such as carrying mace or even something that will make a loud noise and alert passers by, things like a whistle or if attacked you can simply yell loudly.

Be wary

The important thing to do when you are out is to always be wary of your circumstances and who is around you. Don’t let yourself get into a situation where you could come to any harm. Don’t be paranoid but just be mindful of what is going on around you.
